WHAT’S THE
ROLE OF EXTERNAL RADIATION THERAPY (ERT) IN THE MANAGEMENT OF PATIENTS WITH
DIFFERENTIATED THYROID CANCER?
Traditionally,
well-differentiated thyroid cancer has been considered radioresistant. Recent
experience, however, indicates that ERT could be useful in selected cases,
including:
ü Poorly differentiated papillary,
follicular, or Hürthle cell thyroid cancer
ü Extrathyroidal extension
ü Tumors not concentrating radioactive
iodine / radioiodine non-avid tumors
ü Gross or microscopic residual tumor
(for example in patients with locally advanced thyroid cancer, especially in
older patients)
ü Inoperable thyroid cancer
ü As adjuvant therapy following
surgery for recurrent thyroid cancer
ü For pain relief in patients with
bone metastases from thyroid cancer
Based on
current literature, there is evidence that ERT can significantly improve local
control of the disease and reduce the incidence of tumor recurrence.
