PARATHYROMATOSIS – A VERY RARE BUT PREVENTABLE CAUSE OF RECURRENT/PERSISTENT RECURRENT HYPERPARATHYROIDISM Parathyromatosis is a rare condition causing hypercalcemia due to multiple embryologic rests or, more commonly, due to seeding when a parathyroid tumor (most commonly adenoma) or its capsule has ruptured during parathyroidectomy. Parathyromatosis is characterized by the presence of hyperfunctioning parathyroid tissues (sometimes found as multiple small nodules) scattered throughout the neck and even the upper mediastinum. Medical treatment is usually ineffective. Patients may be submitted to multiple surgeries which – unfortunately – are often unsuccessful. These data emphasize the importance of a careful and meticulous surgical technique during the excision of a parathyroid adenoma to avoid spillage of cells from the diseased parathyroid parenchyma.
