DIFFUSELY
INFILTRATING PAPILLARY THYROID CANCER-A UNIQUE BUT IMPORTANT PRESENTATION OF
THYROID CANCER IN CHILDREN
A unique
but very important difference in children is that papillary thyroid cancer
(PTC) may present as diffusely infiltrating disease that results in diffuse
enlargement of a lobe or the entire gland. For this reason, diffuse thyroid
enlargement, especially when associated with palpable cervical lymph nodes,
should prompt imaging. With rare exception, the diffuse infiltrating form of
papillary thyroid cancer is associated with microcalcifications that warrant
Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology. This aggressive diagnostic evaluation avoids
the risk of misdiagnosis and undertreatment of a highly curable type of cancer, especially in
children.
