MEDULLARY
THYROID CANCER (MTC): SERUM CALCITONIN (CTN) LEVELS AND METASTATIC DISEASE
Cervical
lymph node metastases are possible when serum CTN levels are > 40 pg/ml in
patients having previous thyroidectomy or > 10 pg/mL in patients having
reoperative surgery. Distant metastases are possible at CTN levels > 150
pg/mL, are present in more than 50 % of patients at CTN levels > 5000 pg/mL
and are virtually always present at CTN levels > 20.000 pg/mL. In a study of
patients with 1 – 2 or 4 sites of distant metastases, the median serum CTN was
1500 pg/mL and 18.500 pg;/mL, respectively.
