EPIDEMIOLOGY
AND SURVIVAL OF PATIENTS WITH MEDULLARY THYROID CANCER
TRENDS DURING
THE LAST 3 DECADES
Although
MTC accounts for only 5 % of all thyroid cancers, it is responsible for
approximately 13 % of all thyroid cancer related deaths. Most cases of MTC are
sporadic but up to 25 % are associated with a hereditary mutation in the RET
proto-oncogene. During the last 3 decades (1983 – 2012):
Ι.The
incidence of MTC is rising (from 0.14 to 0.21 per 100.000 population)
ΙΙ.The
proportion of MTC < 1 cm increased from 11.4 % (1983 – 1992) to 19.6 % (1993
– 2002) to 25.1 % (2003 – 2012), but stage at diagnosis remained constant
