DYNAMIC
RISK STRATIFICATION IN MEDULLARY THYROID CANCER; PROGNOSTIC SIGNIFICANCE
Based on
the response to therapy in individual patients, dynamic risk stratification of
MTC includes the following clinical outcomes:
1.EXCELLENT
RESPONSΕ
§ Undetectable calcitonin
§ Normal levels of CEA
§ Absence of structurally identifiable
disease
2.BIOCHEMICAL
INCOMPLETE RESPONSE
§ Detectable calcitonin or
§ Elevated CEA serum levels
§ Absence of structurally identifiable
disease
3.STRUCTURAL
INCOMPLETE RESPONSE
§ Presence of recurrent/persistent structurally
identifiable disease
This
dynamic risk stratification of patients with MTC has prognostic importance,
since disease-specific mortality is < 3 %, 11 % and 40 – 55 % for patients
with excellent response, biochemical incomplete response and structural incomplete
response, respectively.
