EFFECTS OF
SURGERY ON THE NATURAL HISTORY OF PRIMARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM
Parathyroidectomy
(PTx) is the only curative approach to primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). PTx removing
all the hyperfunctioning parathyroid parenchyma achieves permanent cure of the
disease and is associated with:
1.Significant
improvement of bone mineral density (BMD)
2.Lower
rate of bone (in particular, vertebral) fractures
3.Significant
decrease of the risk for renal stone formation (especially, recurrent stones)
4.Prevention
of decline in renal function among patients with chronic kidney disease
5.Ameliorates
/eliminates vague clinical symptomatology, such as fatigue, sense of weakness,
mild depression, memory impairment, cognitive dysfunction, musculoskeletal/joint
pain, muscle weakness, hyperreflexia, etc. These vague symptoms are often
underestimated before surgery.
These therapeutic
results significantly improve quality of life following PTx.
