INDICATIONS FOR FINE-NEEDLE ASPIRATION (FNA) CYTOLOGY IN CHILDREN WITH THYROID NODULES

Indications for FNA cytology in children with thyroid nodules include:

1.Thyroid nodules measuring > 1 cm, solid hypoechoic, palpable or nonpalpable

2.Thyroid nodules < 1 cm with ultrasonographic characters highly suspicious for cancer, such as:

                a.Hypoechogenicity

                b.Microcalcifications

                c.Irregular borders

                d.Shape taller-than-wide

                e.Increased chaotic vascularity

                f.Pathologically enlarged lymph nodes
