FETAL COMPLICATIONS OF MATERNAL PRIMARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM (PHPT) DURING PREGNANCY

Maternal PHPT during pregnancy is associated with significant fetal morbidity (up to 80 %). The most common and serious fetal complications include:

1.Neonatal hypocalcemia and tetany (up to 50 %, with or without seizures), which may persist for many weeks after birth and may require intravenous calcium supplementation. Rarely, hypocalcemia may be permanent, due to parathyroid aplasia during gestation

2.Stillbirth

3.Miscarriage (x5), often during the 2nd trimester in women with calcium levels > 11.5 mg/dL

4.Premature birth

5.Intrauterine growth retardation – low birth weight
