THYROID
CANCER AND GRAVES’ DISEASE
Thyroid
cancer in patients with Graves’ disease was originally considered to be a rare coexistence
(~ 2 %). Graves’ disease classically was considered in the past even as an ‘insurance
against thyroid cancer’. However, thyroid nodules are frequently observed in patients
with Graves’ disease (prevalence: 3-fold higher compared to the general population)
and these nodules may be associated with a risk of thyroid cancer. Currently available
data indicate the risk of thyroid cancer is at least double the widely-accepted
~ 2 %. Obviously, the diagnosis of thyroid cancer in Graves’ disease should be
taken into consideration in selecting optimal management, since surgical
treatment will be required in these cases.
