Postmenopausal woman
·
Prolonged, severe calcium or vitamin D deficiency
·
Specific genetic disorders, such as in Multiple Endocrine
Neoplasia syndrome, type 1 or type 2A (MEN1 or MEN2A) (multiple glands are
typically affected [diffuse hyperplasia])

Radiation therapy to the
head/neck or chest for treatment of cancer, exposing neck to radiation (for example, in
patients with lymphoma or breast cancer). Also, exposure to radioactive fallout from
nuclear testing or a nuclear disaster.

Lithium treatment (often used to treat bipolar
disorder)
