PROJECTING
CANCER INCIDENCE TO 2030; THYROID CANCER IS EXPECTED TO BECOME THE FOURTH MORE
COMMON TYPE OF CANCER
Currently,
lung, breast, prostate and colorectal cancer are considered the most common
types of malignant diseases in the USA and in many western countries. Thyroid
cancer is notable in that it is increasing dramatically and at a rate faster
than any other malignancy in the west in both men and women (5.4 % and 6.5% average
annual percentage change, respectively) and its incidence has increased more
than 200 % since the 1970s. Based on epidemiologic data, by 2030 thyroid,
melanoma, and uterine cancers are projected to surpass colorectal cancer to
become the fourth, fifth,
and sixth highest in absolute cases, respectively.
