INDICATIONS FOR SURGERY IN THE MANAGEMENT OF
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Surgery in patients with hyperthyroidism should be
considered in the presence of:
1.Severe hyperthyroidism and a large goiter (which may
cause obstructive pressure symptoms)
2.Allergies or poor compliance on antithyroid drugs
3.Moderate to severe active orbitopathy in patients desiring
definitive therapy for their hyperthyroidism
4.Pregnancy and allergy to antithyroid drugs
5.Coexistance of suspicious or malignant thyroid
nodule(s)
6.Coexistance of primary hyperparathyroidism
7.When the patient refuse or fear radioiodine therapy
(unpopular treatment option in Europe, more used in the US)
8.Presence of hyperfunctioning thyroid nodule (‘toxic
adenoma’)
9.Failure to achieve normalization of thyroid function
using antithyroid drugs
