PREOPERATIVE
MEASURES DIMINISHING THE RISK OF POST-THYROIDECTOMY HYPOCALCEMIA (P-T H)
Post-thyroidectomy
hypocalcemia (P-T H) is usually due to parathyroid gland ischemia / injury or incidental
parathyroid resection. Supplementing oral calcium, vitamin D or both
preoperatively (for two weeks prior to surgery) may reduce the risk of
hypocalcemia following thyroidectomy performed for the management of thyroid
cancer but also of Graves’ disease. Preoperative vitamin D deficiency and Graves’
disease are two risk factors for the development of P-T H.
