TIMING OF
PROPHYLACTIC THYROIDECTOMY
The risk of
medullary thyroid cancer development in MEN2 syndrome depends on the type of RET mutation (codon)
Some
mutations are associated with a very high risk of MTC development and
therefore, in these mutation carriers early prophylactic thyroidectomy is
recommended. In contrast, other RET
mutations are associated with lower risk (intermediate or moderate) for MTC
development and in these mutation carriers prophylactic thyroidectomy can be
performed later (see Table). It should be emphasized that MTC in MEN2B syndrome
is an aggressive malignancy.
