LOCALIZATION
STUDIES; WHAT’S THEIR ROLE FOR THE DIAGNOSIS OF PRIMARY HYPERPARATHYROIDISM?
Localization
studies should be used for biochemically diagnosed primary hyperparathyroidism
(PHPT) to select patients for a minimally invasive (focused) parathyroidectomy and
to identify ectopic/supernumerary pathological parathyroid glad(-s), thereby
increasing success rates of surgery.
Localization
studies HAVE NO ROLE in diagnosing PHPT (because of a high rate of false
positive results [range: 5-25 %]) and in determining the need for surgery.
